The Damascus metropolitan is the maximum city in Syria which has a population of about 4 million. In order to correspond to the increase of population by a population influx from rural areas in recent years, the revise of city master plan, decided in 1968, was required, according to change of the city and vision over a long period of time. This project was enforced as technical assistance of JICA, the master
plan for advancing sustainable development of a metropolitan was strategically decided. The common team with counterpart members of Syrian side was organized and planning work was done. Moreover, participatory planning process was introduced for the project and several workshops with residents were done as pioneer of planning approach in Syria. Now, several urban developing projects in the central part of Damascus city are advanced based on this plan.
